Energy Systems Catapult is the trading name of Energy Systems Catapult Limited, a company limited by guarantee, and registered in the UK under company number 08705784, whose main place of business is at 7th Floor, 18 Priory Queensway, Birmingham B4 6BS.

This privacy notice applies to all personal data processing carried out by Energy Systems Catapult in relation to the Living Lab. Please read our privacy notice carefully.

This notice (together with our Terms and Conditions) sets out the basis on which we will process the personal data we collect from you, or that you provide to us. By joining the Living Lab and using our website, you are accepting and consenting to the practices described in this notice.

For the purposes of the Data Protection Act 2018, we are the Data Controller and you are the Data Subject.

The Living Lab is a community of households, like yours. Its purpose is to help UK innovators and policy-makers design, test and launch better energy products and services by giving them feedback on how well their ideas work in practice.

Energy Systems Catapult operates the Living Lab via this website, our data systems, and our dedicated support team.

Types of data we collect about you and how we use it

1. Website sign up information

Your email address is used to set up your account on our website, allowing you to access and update your data as well as find out more about the Living Lab.

2. Contact information

Your name, address, telephone number and confirmation that you are over 18. Your address helps us when selecting for research activity and trials. Your name and phone number helps us support you while you are a member of the Living Lab. This information may also be shared with our partners if we need to install, support or remove any energy products or register you for services. Your data will only be shared for this purpose once you have given us specific permission.

3. Details about you, your home and your energy devices

This helps us learn about you and your home and identify suitable research and trial offers.

4. Data collected when part of the Living Lab

When you join the Living Lab we ask you to share data from your smart energy meter, if you have one, and from a range of other devices you may have. This data is held in your account and may be used if you take part in a trial or used, in anonymised form, to help researchers and product developers understand changing energy demand.

5. Screening details for trials and research opportunities

We collect further information about you and your home if you apply to take part in a trial or research activity. The information will be used to check your eligibility for the trial and will be stored to better tailor future offers to you.

6. Trial data

Upon acceptance into a trial, we may request permission to collect data directly from additional appliances in your home. This may be an appliance that you already own or one that we have provided for the trial. We may also undertake research surveys or interviews, asking about your home, you and your family, your energy consumption and supply. All of the above will be subject to additional terms and conditions that you would consent to when joining a particular trial.

7. Outside of trials and research

Beyond trials that you are directly signed up for we share anonymised data, collected from you and your home, with researchers within Energy Systems Catapult and with other organisations to help research into better energy products, services and policies. Protections are in place to avoid this data becoming associated with your identity.

We will not use your personal data for any other purpose without asking for your permission.

Where we store your data

We store your data securely. Access within Energy Systems Catapult is restricted to those directly working for the Living Lab.

Your rights in relation to personal data

You can access all the personal data we hold about you via your Living Lab account, logging in with your email address and password. You also have the right to request a copy of any personal data we hold about you at any time by contacting dataprotectionoffice@es.catapult.org.uk.

• You have the right to request correction of personal data which you believe to be incomplete or inaccurate if you cannot update it yourself in your Living Lab account.
• You may withdraw participation in Living Lab trials or research at any time.
• You may close your Living Lab account at any time.
• When you close your account, we will erase personal data that we hold about you. This includes your name, address, phone number and email address. We will stop collecting data from your devices but will retain data already collected.
• The data we retain will be anonymised, meaning it will not be possible to link this data back to you. In this way you will continue to contribute to vital Net Zero research without your personal data being used.
